Transarterial Microembolization for Musculoskeletal Pain (TAME)

Minimally invasive embolization for selected chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions

TAME is an endovascular intervention developed for selected patients with chronic, refractory musculoskeletal pain. Clinical history, physical examination, and imaging are integrated before angiography is used to identify abnormal microvascular signals around the symptomatic lesion. TAME is not a first-line treatment for every pain condition, and eligibility should never be decided from a single image alone.

What is integrated during assessment?

  • Define the primary pain location, provoking movements, disease course, and response to previous treatment.
  • Use radiography, ultrasound, MRI, or MRA according to the anatomical region and clinical question.
  • Determine whether pain is predominantly related to a joint, tendon, ligament, bone marrow lesion, nerve, or postoperative tissue.
  • Discuss conventional angiographic treatment, simplified approaches, and nonvascular alternatives when appropriate.

Situations requiring individualized assessment or a different priority

This list is not intended for self-diagnosis. Acute or rapidly worsening symptoms should be evaluated promptly so that urgent causes can be excluded.

  • Uncontrolled local wound infection, acute infection, or systemic infection.
  • Coagulopathy or antiplatelet/anticoagulant therapy that has not undergone individualized risk assessment.
  • Severe renal impairment, contrast allergy, or peripheral arterial disease requiring a modified strategy.
  • Pregnancy or possible pregnancy, requiring assessment of radiation and contrast-related risks.
  • Fracture, tumor, infection, marked instability, or another condition that should be treated first.

From diagnosis to follow-up
