Bow Wang, M.D. is honored to have the opportunity to invite Dr. Lu Bing-sheng of Xi Yi Clinic in Da'an District, Taipei City, to National Cheng Kung University to teach about trigeminal neuralgia and share his treatment experience using ultrasound, X-ray fluoroscopy, and computed tomography (CT) guidance, as well as high-frequency thermocoagulation therapy.

Under the guidance of Dr. Lu Bingsheng, Bow Wang, M.D. successfully completed a CT-guided trigeminal nerve block procedure.

The trigeminal nerve is the main nerve responsible for facial sensation, distributed in the forehead, cheeks, and chin. When this nerve is compressed or malfunctions, it can cause trigeminal neuralgia. Patients often describe this pain as "an electric current" or "a knife-like pain," which is often sudden and intense, even affecting daily life.

The most common cause is vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve, leading to damage to the epineurium and abnormal electrical discharge. Other possible factors include: multiple sclerosis, tumor compression, or nerve damage following skull base surgery or trauma.

Doctors typically make an initial assessment based on medical history and clinical symptoms, and order MRI imaging to confirm vascular compression or rule out a tumor.

Treatment options include: medication, nerve blocks, alcohol cauterization, high-frequency thermocoagulation, radiation therapy (Gamma Knife), and decompression surgery, etc. The most suitable method should be discussed in detail with the patient in person with their clinician to understand its indications and potential complications before receiving treatment.
