Ms. Y, 69 years old, had suffered from right knee pain for many years. After seeking medical help, she was diagnosed with stage II [Osteoarthritis of the Knee] and required long-term use of painkillers and pain patches.

After several months of medication, the pain persisted, with a pain index (out of 10) reaching a high level of 7.5. She experienced knee weakness and pain upon standing, and the pain would begin after walking for only a short time. After various treatments proved ineffective, she sought medical attention at National Cheng Kung University Hospital [Interventional Medical Center], and further discussion at Bow Wang, M.D. clinic.

After discussing with Ms. Y, Bow Wang, M.D. explained that although Ms. Y had stage II osteoarthritis of the knee, she also had a subchondral insufficiency fracture of the knee with bone marrow lesion.

Bow Wang, M.D. first performed the [Transarterial Microembolization (TAME)] procedure on Ms. Y. Under local anesthesia and guided by X-ray fluoroscopy, Dr. Wang inserted a microcatheter into the painful area via puncture of the inguinal artery. Then, under arterial angiography, contrast agent was injected to identify newly formed capillary-like vessels; embolizing medication was then injected through the microcatheter to remove these abnormal capillary-like vessels.

Two months later, Ms. Y informed Dr. Wang that although her knee had become stronger, her pain score had only decreased from 7.5 to 6. Therefore, Bow Wang, M.D. then performed an [intramedullary PRP regenerative injection therapy] on Ms. Y.

Under X-ray fluoroscopy guidance and local anesthesia, Dr. Wang inserted a needle into the lesion via epidermal puncture and then injected PRP (platelet-rich plasma).

In the follow-up after the injection, although Ms. Y experienced a 3-day discomfort period after the injection, her pain level gradually decreased from 6 to 2 after this period, and her quality of life improved significantly.
